El presente artículo analiza los instrumentos jurídicos internacionales adoptados para la protección de los mamíferos marinos en el Mar Mediterráneo. Los Estados ribereños de este Mar han preferido impulsar una fuerte colaboración regional a este respecto, en lugar de proceder a una ratificación sistemática de los tratados internacionales ambientales de ámbito mundial. Se analizan tres desarrollos regionales importantes. Tras una breve descripción de la única zona declarada como Santuario Mediterráneo para la protección de los mamíferos marinos, el presente trabajo comenta algunos aspectos jurídicos relativos a este Santuario marino. En primer lugar, centro la atención en la forma cómo se estableció este Santuario marino. Scientific analysis were undertaken within a research project concerning ivory objects from the Chalcolithic to Early Bronze Age of the Iberian Peninsula. In several of the analyses of objects from Portuguese Estremadura, especially V-perforated buttons, we could detect for the first time the presence of sperm whale ivory. This highlights the advantage and necessity of scientific analysis of ivory. It also clearly demonstrates that not all ivory used was ivory from African or Asian elephants, but we also did find ivory from the extinct Elephas antiquus, the hippopotamus and in this case sperm-whale. Marine mammals rely on their diving capacity to survive as this determines their foraging efficiency. Ultimately, their anatomy and physiological capacity, and the limitations imposed by the environment determine the maximal time underwater. Thus, the behavioral decisions undertaken by marine mammals would be related with the different combination of these factors. As air breathing mammals, respiratory function may alter the diving capacities and limit foraging. At present, the metazoan parasite fauna of most species of otariids is generally poorly known, in part because these marine mammals are mostly protected and, therefore, sampling is limited to specimens stranded on the coast or captured as by-catch in fisheries. Similar problems also occur for the larval stages of gastrointestinal helminths of otariids. For most of these parasite species, the specific identity of the intermediate/paratenic of hosts is unknown and, therefore, many stages of their life cycles remain to be described.
